VIAVI Joins AWRI and the CORD Project to Support Industry Collaboration on Next-Generation Network Technology

VIAVI is committed to 5G research, development and standardization and has joined two industry groups facilitating collaboration in this area.

Milpitas, Calif., September 1, 2016 – VIAVI Solutions (NASDAQ: VIAV) today highlighted its commitment to 5G research, development and standardization by announcing it has joined two industry groups facilitating collaboration in this area.

Fifth-generation (5G) communications technology promises to bring disruptive and delightful experiences to subscribers, and new business models and efficiencies to operators, by connecting more diverse endpoints and devices than ever before. As a premier provider of test, assurance and optimization solutions to operators and equipment manufacturers around the globe, VIAVI is committed to participating in major industry research initiatives, and actively contributing to the development of well-defined and harmonized standards. VIAVI incorporates this forward thinking into solutions it delivers to the industry today, enabling customers to manage operational networks while gaining valuable analytics to inform future network plans.

AWRI

The Advanced Wireless Research Initiative (AWRI) is a $400 million U.S. program announced by the White House and led by the National Science Foundation, bringing together government, private-sector companies and industry associations to deploy four city-scale testing platforms to advance the next generation of wireless networks. As a member of AWRI, VIAVI will provide test, measurement, assurance, and optimization solutions for lab and field trials for network and services to enable next-generation technologies for the always-connected society and Internet of Things.

CORD

The Central Office Rearchitected as a Datacenter (CORD) initiative is an open-source project that delivers cloud economics and agility to the telco central office (CO). The CORD service delivery platform combines SDN, NFV and elastic cloud services to network operators and service providers. It integrates ONOS, OpenStack, Docker and XOS—all running on merchant silicon, white-box switches, commodity servers, and disaggregated access devices. Mobile CORD (M-CORD) is aimed at mobile customers with disaggregated and virtualized RAN and EPC and mobile edge computing. VIAVI will provide M-CORD with end-to-end monitoring and analytics capabilities enabling dynamic testing, visibility and feeding continuous closed-loop automation and optimization of network slicing operations in a variety of deployment scenarios.

“Service providers have announced plans to launch 5G networks as early as 2017, but harmonization and standardization have to occur for the technology to reach critical mass,” said Sameh Yamany, Chief Technology Officer, VIAVI Solutions. “It is essential for the industry to work together in a collaborative, open-source manner to develop common architectures and reference implementations for 5G to truly scale and mature. We are pleased to already be deeply engaged in the principal initiatives to achieve this goal.”
