Embedded Application-Aware Intelligence Enables Critical VisibilityIntro Traffic Dynamics At Aggregation Layers

Milpitas, Calif., February 18, 2016 – VIAVI Solutions (NASDAQ: VIAV) today introduced the industry’s first 10 GbE Ethernet Microprobe, including a 10-fold increase in capacity with embedded application-aware intelligence in the familiar enhanced small form-factor pluggable (SFP+) size. With the higher capacity, elimination of the need for a separate intelligence solution, and integration into VIAVI’s cloud-based PacketPortal Ethernet monitoring platform, operators now have unprecedented capabilities for visibility into traffic behavior in the network. VIAVI will be demonstrating the 10 GbE Microprobe at Mobile World Congress, Hall 6, Booth 6I37, February 22-25.

Mobile networks worldwide may be at different stages of development between 3G and 5G, but are following a common path involving network function virtualization (NFV) and capacity increases at all layers to support ever-surging traffic. 100 Gpbs backbones are emerging now, and with them the aggregation layers are advancing to 10 Gbps. Until today, SFP+ Ethernet probes have been limited to 1 Gbps, creating a gap in visibility at higher speeds that creates one of three challenges for operators: blindness to traffic behavior; reliance on a complex system of probes distributed at lower layers; or multi-box solutions at points of aggregation.

Based on requirements from its installed base of operators, VIAVI set out to fill this gap by evolving its PacketPortal 1 GbE SFP+ probe to support increased capacity while maintaining the size and form factor to provide operators with deployment flexibility. This development also anticipates the significantly higher transport and backhaul speeds required to implement 5G networks. Passive analysis of voice, video and data traffic arms customers with real-time understanding of application distribution, traffic patterns and traffic bursts, enabling them to troubleshoot individual network segments and network elements to help ensure subscriber quality of experience. The PacketPortal 10 GbE Ethernet Microprobe is part of VIAVI’s broader portfolio for real-time end-to-end network visibility and intelligence enabling assurance in both physical and virtual environments.

“We are proud of our engineering achievement in packaging such powerful functionality into such a small footprint which allows it to be deployed anywhere in mobile backhaul, data center and business service networks,” said Michael McCallen, Director of Product Line Management, VIAVI Solutions. “Embedding application-aware intelligence into the probe increases visibility, reduces operational complexity and further facilitates virtualization.”
