VIAVI Solutions simplifies OTDR certification with updated Smart Link Mapper application for FTTH/PON
December 7, 2017 — VIAVI today releases a significant update to its FTTH variant of the Smart Link Mapper (SLM) application, FTTH-SLM.
Fiber certification can be challenging. OTDRs are often considered complex to configure and measurement results difficult to interpret. SLM removes that complexity and supports technicians of any skill level by delivering a fully automated, tailored application backed by VIAVI's fiber knowledge and experience.
FTTH-SLM addresses the differences in workflow, terminology and optical components found in FTTH deployments. By using more relevant icons and labels to depict events and components, such as splitters, it makes understanding results easy.
With FTTH/PON architectures, achieving reliable event detection can also be challenging. To mitigate the complexity, FTTH-SLM uses a feature called Smart Acquisition to automate the use of multiple tests and pulse widths to accurately characterize the sections of a FTTH plant. Traces are then combined into a single SLM view with a combined events table and OTDR traces view.
Benefits:
- Easy results interpretation: simple icon-based link view and single events table
- Eliminates setup errors: automatic network discovery and configuration for test (no prior network knowledge needed)
- Minimal training required: single button test, automatic result storage
- Unrivaled event detection: multiple pulse widths per wavelength
- Simple certification: cloud-based or on-board SOR & PDF report generation
SLM is a field installable software application for use with all VIAVI OTDRs. It's ideal for installers and contractors performing installation, commissioning or maintenance of any fiber network. VIAVI is the worldwide leader in OTDR manufacturing and has been awarded the coveted Frost & Sullivan Fiber Optics Test Equipment Market Leader Award for fiber-optic test equipment six years in a row.
