Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) - Technologies and Tools for Successful Deployment

Whether its residential or enterprise, the demand for bandwidth is driving MSOs to invest in their fiber networks. One of the easiest and most cost-effective methods is through the use of wave division multiplexing (WDM). WDM essentially provides a way to add multiple virtual fiber lanes to an existing fiber thus increasing the amount of data that can be transmitted over it.

The initial roll outs were Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) which allowed operators to transmit up to 18 channels over multiple bands on a single fiber. Most recently, Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) has emerged as the technology of choice providing up to 96 channels in the C-band over a single fiber.
