PCIe 7.0
Enabling the Next Era of Scale-Up and Data-Intensive Computing
VIAVI is investing in the PCIe 7.0 ecosystem with a full complement of protocol analysis testing tools that will support the PCIe7 specification of 128GT/s with continued use of PAM4 signaling and FLIT-based encoding
PCIe® 7.0 represents the next major evolution of the industry’s most critical high speed interconnect. Defined by PCI SIG®, the PCIe 7.0 specification doubles bandwidth once again to support computing architectures where data movement, not processing, increasingly defines overall system performance.
As AI, machine learning, and data intensive workloads scale, systems are becoming larger, more interconnected, and more sensitive to latency and efficiency. PCIe 7.0 is designed for these challenges. By delivering dramatically higher throughput per lane, it enables higher accelerator density, faster access to memory and storage, and more balanced platforms—without compromising the low latency and reliability PCIe is known for. As with every PCIe generation, PCIe 7.0 maintains full backward compatibility, protecting existing investments while delivering a clear, standards based path forward. It provides the confidence the industry needs to design, deploy, and validate the next generation of high performance systems.
Scale-up Architectures for More Efficient Data Movement
Modern computing demands systems that can scale performance by integrating multiple CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators within a single platform. PCIe 7.0’s doubled bandwidth and enhanced signal integrity enable these scale-up architectures to operate efficiently, supporting larger multi-GPU configurations and shared resource designs. Retimers play a vital role in maintaining signal quality across dense, high-speed connections, ensuring reliable communication without compromising latency.
Additionally, PCIe 7.0 aligns with the industry's shift toward optical connectivity. PCIe over optics extends the reach beyond traditional copper cables, enabling longer distances and improved power efficiency. This capability unlocks new possibilities for rack-scale and composable system designs, preserving the PCIe protocol’s behavior while overcoming physical limitations.
Continued Support for Complementary Protocols
PCIe 7.0 also strengthens the foundation for emerging technologies such as Compute Express Link (CXL) and future Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) storage platforms, ensuring that memory expansion, resource pooling, and storage performance can continue to scale alongside compute.
VIAVI Xgig PCIe 7.0 Testing Platform
The new VIAVI PCIe 7.0 protocol analysis testing platform, part of the VIAVI Xgig® family, will include Analyzers, Exercisers, and high-performance Interposers.
These tools are vital in product development because they help identify and resolve protocol and performance issues early. By ensuring compliance with PCI-SIG standards and validating device behavior under various conditions, these tools improve reliability, accelerate debugging, and reduce time-to-market.
A robust platform designed to provide deep insights, the new Xgig PCIe 7.0 platform will include familiar Xgig analysis capabilities including:
- Xgig Software Suite – Trace Control, Expert, and Serialytics that simplify data interpretation and performance analysis while enabling developers to more quickly identify, locate and resolve errors. Full-stack analysis for IDE, NVMe and CXL. Python API scripting for better automation and error injection.
- CXL® Protocol Support – Analyzer/Exerciser accommodates all CXL release specifications, including CXL 3.x and future releases. Every aspect and property of exchanges can be searched, filtered and analyzed using advanced Xgig software tools.
- Link Training and Status State Machine (LTSSM) Override – enables users to create unexpected states or control states with corner case LTSSM testing that uncovers hidden problems enables rapid identification and troubleshooting.
- Auto Tuning – optimized fine tuning to shorten tuning time and minimize reboots—along with EQ memory to eliminate the need for re-tuning.
- Port Bifurcation – increases productivity of a single analysis chassis by enabling multiple analysis instances to be performed at the same time by local or remote users.
