VIAVI TestCenter: why am I getting 256 in 2.4GHz?

Answer:

The chipset being used is capable of support VHT MCS8/MCS9 in 2.4G band (even when not being part of 802.11n), this capability is enabled by default. STC 5.23 will have an option to disable VHT in 2.4GHz so you can choose if using VHT in 2.4GHz or not.
